Indian meal moth - Plodia interpunctella

Color
First third of forewings are pale gray. Remainders are reddish-brown.

Larva
Yellowish white, reddish or greenish depending on diet, with brown head.

Life cycle
25-135 days.

Habits
Attacks grain fruits, coffee beans, dried fruits, cornmeal, chocolate, candies, powdered milk, biscuits, bird seed, etc. Adults cause no damage. Larvae are surface feeders. Adults are strong flyers.

Biology
Female lays 100-400 eggs. Upon hatching the larva establishes itself in a crevice of food material.

Mature larva yellowish to white.

Life cycle
30-50 days at 35C, 3-4 months at 20C. Adults live 6-10 months. May live longer than 3 years.

Habits
Attacks cereals, bread, macaroni, dried fruits, nuts, sugar, chocolate, dried meats, candy bars, drugs, tobacco, etc. It does not attack sound kernels. Its flat body form permits access through very small cracks and imperfectly sealed packages.

Female lays 45-285 eggs in crevices in the food material.

Life cycle
About 98 days at 18C. Will not develop below 16C. 32 days in summer. The optimum conditions are 27-30C, 75-90% humidity and grain of 13.5 – 17.6 % moisture content. Adults live for several months to one year.

Habits
More often found in wheat than in rice. Attack corn, beans, nuts, rye, buckwheat, grapes and others. Can fly at 30C. 

Biology
Female lays 300-400 eggs into the kernel of grain.
